I'm sure the brick building to the left of the picture was the old Almond's Brewery
It sure is John, & between the brewery & the houses beyond was the coal line from Robin Hill pit to Gidlow wash. On to Rylands sidings on the Main Line (west coast)
building on the right owd Joe Hunters.
The Wheatsheaf was closed in Nov.1982. Behind the pub was a brewery opened in 1870 by J.B.Almond, but taken over by the Burtonwood Brewery in 1968.
Both the pub and the brewery were demolished in May 1985.
The row of terraced houses along School Lane were owned by the Almond family and leased to brewery workers. The Almond family themselves lived in The Beeches further up School Lane.
does any body remmber the public toilets where joe hunters shop is was were the gable end is
The family Speakman lived in School Lane. I went to school with their daughter Pat. We were good mates for many years. When the new St Peters was built at Orell Post we had great times just beefing school kids. I think Pat got married to a lad called Short. Anyway we had good times. Cheers.
Remember it well the stench unall.
The hotel and brewery were demolished by compulsary purchase order, to make way for a roundabout to alleviate traffic on this notorious crossroads, the land was then sold at a profit to a supermarket chain, nuff said about the corupt council that now plans the same fate for Ashfield Park and other open spaces in the village.
Used to get off the bus there from Shevington Comprehensive, cross the road and walk along the railway line home (I lived on Wigan Road).
does any older people in standish remember hilda lowe who lived at 6 school lane her friends where rene hart and ann Wilson.
My Great Uncle, Walter Ashurst, used to live at the Wheatsheaf until his death in 1972. Some of the older members might remember him.
Eddie, a school friend, can’t remember her Christian name, was a Lowe and lived at 6 School Lane. Give me something to think about today.
