Remember walking down here as a child. I can remember the cafe and smiths book stall was there a pub called the legs of man not to sure on that.
I had a saturday job in the very late 60's working on the stocking stall at the top of the arcade with my friend Eunice her sister Margaret owned the stall. Our lunch was provided from Gorners cafe at the bottom of the arcade.
there was a pub it was the legs of man and it was at both ends they were known as top and bottom legs i think there was a passage at the back linking them both
I worked at Wilbrooks on Station road when I was sixteen and used to go to Gorners for my dinner, when I see that photo I can smell the food.I came from Wallgate so a lot of my time was spent around Wigan anyway,I wouldn't swap those years in Wigan and Wallgate for anything.
Always used to buy my stockings from the stocking stall. I think they were Golden Tan and if my memory serves me right they were thick.
Anyone know who the woman and child are?
who remembers the chair for weighing people
yes I remember the weighing chair, and the stocking counter, gorners café. what a wonderfully atmospheric arcade that was. all gone alas, I don't go to wigan these days it is too sad to remember how it was then.
