photo is top of Greenough Street looking up Schoefield Lane. Shop across and on left was Sherringtons - used go go every Saturday morning for parafin - loved the smells in that shop - no platic bags everything wrapped up in brown paper!

This is the top of Greenhough Street, the pub is probably The Boyswell, across the road is Scholefield Lane and the double fronted shop with all the stuff outside like Open All Hours is Sherringtons. A superb photo of old Scholes Darren.

I've just seen another photo taken from across the road from here and it says the pub is The Windmill so I was wrong about The Boyswell.

Waw! great pic that Darren, I dont remember that pub next to you say 'Maddocks' doesnt look like one, so small, anyway 'boyswell' sounds good to me, I think the building on right behind the lampost was the Windmill.

The shop on the extreme left, which is just at the top of Greenough St,a bit of which can be seen, is McCurdys stores, on the right, The Windmill pub, & directly in front of the white line road marking with the grey upper floor, is the "Dust'ole" pub.
At that time, continuing up Scholefield Lane, there were two more pubs. the Spotted Cow & the Mount Pleasant.

Correction to my last post; McCurdys was higher up Scholes between Scholefield Lane & Platt Lane :o(
The shop just in shot, on the left of Greenough St was a gents outfitters I think (maybe wrong...Age tha'knows?)

The pub facing Greenough St. was the Rose & Crown (Long Pull?).Reggie Sutton's gents outfitters is just visible on the left.

Correction to possible "Long Pull" Art is right with "Dust Hole".

Hello art, I can remember going in the shop on the left of the photo with my uncle in the sixties, the man who owned it was called Reg ? I cannot recall his surname, it was also the name of the shop. He did sell clothes and household items as I remember my uncle bought a transistor radio which at the time were just becoming popular, you could also buy items on tick and pay for them weekly, folks used call it a club. When Scholes was being demolished he then moved to the Dicconson Street area. Stii can't think of his name, hopefully someone will remember it.

Cyril, The chap who owned the shop on the corner was called Reg Sutton, I was a friend of his nieces, Sandra Sutton, her father and Reg Sutton were brothers.

superb pics darren,,,,memories are flooding back,,looking down scholes from darren,s other pic,,there seems to be another pub on the other side of the stocking shop,,,there,s a sign for "the harp inn" I think it says,,yes going up scofield lane,,the was "the mount pleasant"and "the spotted cow"was next to the boys playground in st catherines school,,,with off course "the birkett bank hotel"on corner of hardybutts,scofield and birkett bank,,,,,barren anymore for anymore???

Reg Suttons was the only shop in Wigan were you could get wide bottom trousers. He was famous for it.

Jim, wasn't there a pub called "the dust hole" roundabout there, as for the birkett bank hotel seems they were Rooneys also just like my family, its a small world isn't it mmm xx

Just out of shot to the right of the lamp post was a public urinal. Just thought I'd add a bit of culture.

The pub in the centre of the piture is The Dust Hole (The Rose and Crown)it was an ale house,no wine or spirits just draught and bottled beer.The best pint of Walkers bitter in Wigan!!!

Reg Sutton's famous for wide bottom trousers in Scholes, Wigan was owned by my father who was a gent's outfitter for many years in Scholes and it was myself Reg Sutton Jnr who introduced wide bottom trousers in 1965

The shop on the corner is Worthington' ice cream shop there was side winodw through which you could served next door is Walderon's miilliners then TheRose and Crown (The Dust Hole) Next door is Seddon' stocking shop Derek Lyons is right The Dust Hole served the best bitter in Wigan we used to ask for a pint of Necter
