I don't know the name of any of the pupils but the teacher is Mr.Horace(Tubby)Edwards.I was on the staff with him 1956-60.
tubby edwards would have been better suited to a concentration camp guard rather than a teacher,
It's a pity there are not a few more like Tubby teaching now.

I agree with Bob B, Any one remotely like Tubby Edwards should be shot at birth, I was at that school when he was there, He was a nasty piece of work,
tubby edwards may have been a bit draconian but what a teacher i still remember every word he said and every thump he gave me
That NASTY TUBBY EDWARDS He should have been sent to prison for how he treated some of the pupils especially those with learning difficulties, In those days we never spoke up. I hope he is suffering in hell for what he did to us.
mr cunliffe where you the pe teacher
Norman Cunliffe was our P,E teacher and our football and rugby coach he also took us for R E and was our form teacher for a while before he moved on to teach at Shevington new school one of your better teachers and an approachable guy also had links to Wigan rugby Union he got us to play in an R U sevens competition even though we had never played rugby union before
thanks for that Roy
I've only just seen your entry, Roy, but thanks for your complimentary remarks about me.I now live in Thailand for part of the year but I'm home for the rugby season!
Great to read your entry, Norman, its good that an ex teacher as turned up on our pages. My most treasured memories are from my school years and some teachers have left an indelible mark in my mind.I remember one instance in your class where i was selected to keep score on the blackboard in a questions and answers compitition between the pupils, one question was, what is the Roman numeral for ten, and as you where facing the class and i was behind you at the blackboard ijust muttered x, you then addressed the class and said that they must put their hand up if they knew the answer, and every time i gave the answer you repeated the same instruction until you got fed up and issued a warning that the next person who speaks out of turn will get the cane. Of course i didnt think this meant me as i was behind you at the front of the class and as i repeated the answer one more time out came the big stick, which gave everybody a good laugh, exept me that is.But the punishment wasnt delivered with much venum and i did see the funny side. What this taught me is never volunteer for anything and keep my mouth shut.I am sure that that this as helped me in lifes journey Anyway Norman what a life you have, being able to live in Thailand and come back for the rugby season. Must say that i have never travelled that far for a match
Sorry about the cane Roy! I'm not sure if 'never volunteer' is always the right option but if it has stood you in good stead, that's all that matters. I suppose I have been lucky being able to 'escape' to Thailand's sunshine during part of the year but believe it or not, I would much prefer to watch Wigan at Central Park in the winter.I shall be flying out a few days after I have watched Wigan win the Grand Final again (I hope !!!)Anyway,it's good to talk to you; I shall look for any more comments from you when I'm home in Chiang Mai (350 miles north of Bangkok). Back over here for Christmas.Bye for now, Norman.
No need to apologise about the cane Norman it was never used to inflict pain but to emphasise a point.Anyway the pain has subsided now.Well you wont be watching Wigan win the play offs this year, pity it was St Helens that beat them. I logged on to google earth to have a look at your second home and what a beautiful place it is,its when you live in a different country you realise how poor England has become, not quite third world but on the way.Ilived in South Africa for a number of years and found it to be fantastic to have a barbacue on chritmas day down by a lake in shorts and T shirt.Have a very good Christmas.
I was talking to Keith Mills earlier this week. He showed me some photos of my rugby teams I hadn't seen before. I recognised most of the faces, including yours Roy,but Keith had to supply the names for me.I'm back in Thailand now;the flood water has receded from Chiang Mai but large areas are still badly flooded. Not unusual for this time of year, we're coming towards the end of the rainy season. You're right - very disappointing not to be in the Grand Final especially having been beaten by the 'old enemy'.I shall suffer withdrawal symptoms now until next season starts.

sacrilege; I shall haunt the place when i go
Glad to see the back of that dump, Beech And Edwards 2 teachers if you could possible call them that, were two nasty pieces of work WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENT TO PRISON FOR WHAT THEY DID,
Yes, Whelley was a hard school but a fair one.
Whelley Sec Mod , Those with learning difficulties had a very hard time of it by him they call Tubby Edwards , he treated those with difficulties very badly , if they did not know a question they had to stand up for a full hour while he encouraged the pupils to laugh at them , Hope his family see this .
