Which church spire is that in the background to the right of the photo?
I used to use this line to go to Irlam Steelworks ( Lancashire Steel Corporation) in the late 50's, during our school holidays. I've been trying to name all the stations between Wigan Central and Irlam and Cadishead.
Anyone any bright ideas?
jim,see if these ring a bell with you.lower ince.hindley south.bickershaw&abram.west leigh&bedford.lowton st marys.culcheth.newchurch halt.glazebrook.
Lower Ince, Hindley South, Bickershaw & Abram, West Leigh & Bedford, Lowton St. Marys, Culcheth and Newchurch Halt were the stations between Wigan Central and Glazebrook Junction.
Thanks Geoff and Steve for that. I've done a bit of hunting around myself and have just come across the O.S. map of Bolton and Manchester, which put me onto www.joycewhitchurch.care4free.net/1924
It shows this area and all the railway stations are marked.
I remember being taken on a school trip to Irlam steel works about 1954 Jim.I can still remember thinking "God this is a dangerous place to work"
Sinex; It's either the bell tower on Warrington Lane School, or it is on the little church across the road which has now become the Sea Cadets T.S. Sceptre. Looking at the old church today, I must admit that it doesn't seem as though it has ever had a spire.
Jim Latham - did you go to Wigan Grammar school in the '50's and was friends with my Dad - Geoffrey Buckley and also Mel Wadsworth + Geoffrey 'Jelly' Jackson?
