circa 1960 but could be earlier - I know of a Gymkhana at Haigh in 1955 and perhaps the sign is for that?
This is a splendid lamp post and a good bit of workmanship on the curved flags - who said we should have tarmac pavements and tubular lamp posts so utterly devoid of style and feeling?
I think the photographer is just stood in the road for this view. I'd advise against that today as well.

Back in the late 40s and 50s the Haigh Show (agricultural) was held on the fields down Copperas Lane leading to Haigh Hall.
The sign is obviously pointing towards Haigh Road from the Finger Post.
The old Police Station is in the background, centre of the shot with the Running Horses Hotel to the right of it.
Cyril's oomment on the police station and the Running Horses is spot on - the photo is pre 1960; the lamp would indicate a date around 1954. Shortly after that white concrete lamposts were installed.
Good shot showing the now defunct copshop and "The Runner"
The Running Horses are now appartments and the cop shop has been rebuilt for Ron Dawber to live in.
