Also there is an image of this actual engine on their web page.
Could it be possible that someone may know these two chaps?
That there engine is a super d, they were swines to fire but they could move mountains, also there was very little cover on the footplate so half the time you were open to the elements, not bad going forward but a bit of a bitch going tender first.
On a second look, I think I do know the Driver, Im pretty sure he lived in ambleside, but forgive me if Im wrong. Another bit of useless information, the number 2 you can see chalked on the side was put on when the engine left the cleaning and coaling line, and indicated the shed road it was to be left on
some more useful info on this loco.
for the technically minded
origin L.N.W.R.
introduced 1912
weight 61 tons
length 55ft 4 ins
water capacity 3,000 gallons
purpose heavy freight.
coal capacity 6 tons
in my old Observers book of train locomotives book 1959 I have this engine ticked off.
so its quite possible that i saw this one around that time
perhaps you were on it harold
It is possible it was me, but if it was I was on overtime, at that time I was on the passenger service on the gc line with my regular driver Harry Marriot, can you make out the beware overhead electric sign on the side of the firebox on the engine ???
Great stuff Aitch - you've brought this photo back to life
hmm dk,,,there seems to be a familar little blonde urchin on the footplate there????????
48895 was a longtime Springs Branch loco being there from the 1940s until her withdrawal in August 1962, her duties were the local coal traffic from the many collieries around at that time ,plus the Bamfurlong shunting turns I.E.South end, North end and Ince Moss yards plus the occasional sortie on a main line freight from Carlisle or Crewe, and of course the Whelley bankers. As for the driver Im stumped, over to you Tony .
the driver is Albert Whittaker
good lad tony, albert whittaker.been going through all the drivers i fired for.but could not rember all of them.
Could anyone tell me how meny games of crads could Tim paye play from bamfurlong to roundhouses
48895 Ended its days at BESCOT MPD in 1966 .
Was Super D 49402 a Wigan engine? It had the cab roof extension on the tender.
48895 was one of the last four Super Ds in service withdrawn from Bescot near Walsall in December 1964 aiong with 49361, 49407 and 49430. All four had been fitted with tender cabs as there was a lot of tender first workings from Bescot.
Also 49402 was a long time Wigan engine, right through BR years until withdrawal in November 1962.
