I knew a Sidney Ranicar who lived near Roby Mill on the outskirts of Wigan. He was quite a character He told us he was one of the Ranicars who owned the millinery shop in Wigan
I discovered this article when researchig the previous wners of our house Banghams farm
Mr Ranicar lived here with his Wife Princess Maria Obolensky Ranicar. when we moved in we found records of the business in wigan. I am trying to find photos of their time here.I believe Mrs Ranicar was the neice of the famous Prince Alexander Obolensky who scored a famous try for English Rugby
Just a correction to who's who in the photo. Joshua Marsden isn't the man on the very right on the back row. He's the 4th person from the right on the back row, standing on the right side of his wife Ellen Marsden, nee Ranicar.
Re. the date of the photo - John Martin Aspinall's death was registered in Wigan in last quarter 1901.
There was a Sydney Ranicar (1905-1986) who was the son of Arthur Ranicar,(1862-1920). The Ranicar shops were run by Elias Ranicar (1832-1921) and his son Arthur. I don't know who ran the shop after Arthur and Elias died, but a Ranicar shop carried on until the late 1950s. Sydney Ranicar married Maria Sergeievna Obolensky (1915-2002) and they had, I think, 3 children.
Hi I am in contact with a descendant of the Ranicar family who sent me the above photograph.
John Martin Aspinall was my grandfather. He was married to my grandmother, Eva Ranicar, who was one of the daughters of Elias Ranicar and Harriet Dainty. My grandfather was killed in a mining accident in Oct. of 1901. This left my grandmother with my father and three other children to bring up. In 1910 my father came to Canada (Montreal) and was eventually able to bring my grandmother and his other siblings to Canada.
The children of Elias and Harriet were: Ellen, Eva, Arthur, Annie, Dora and Clarinda. (Clarinda I met was I was ten. She lived at 1 Grange Ave. in Southport I remember).
Arthur married Margaret H. Eaton and Sydney was one of several children who were first cousins to my father.
Gill can you e.mail me ron@wiganworld.co.uk and I'll send you the e.mail address of a descendant of the Ranicar family who would like to contact you.
Re Sydney Ranicar, he was my dads brother, his father was Arthur (seen on the back row of the pic) the comments about his wife are correct, she was known as Marsha, 2 sons, Alex and my namesake Peter ( deceased), Only 9 months older than me, I was born in my grandfathers house on Wigan Lane and my father George forget Peter was already born when I was named, Alex was living in Harrow but not sure where he is now( he was specialising in blood disorders.)they had these bros and sisters, Edward,Gladys, Joyce , Tony ,Frank ( Edward went to Tasmania, Frank lived in Paris, Tony mainly America, Joyce in Hove, Gladys married Sir Simon Lycett Green and lived in Sandal nr Wakefield , all incl: George and Sydney have passed away.
as part of our research of the Russian emigration we are trying to locate the burial place of Maria Ranicar nee Obolensky. She was in fact the sister of the rugby legend Alexander.
Would appreciate any advice on juliakeld at gmail.com
Excuse me intruding on your site. Im part of a History Research Group based at the National Trust property "Treasurers House" in York. This was the house of Frank Green who was a guardian of Gladys Ranicar when her father Arthur died. Gladys went on to marry Frank's great-nephew Sir Simon Lycett-Green. We research Frank's life, so of course I'm interested in the Ranicars, especially as we now know it was Frank Green who housed and supported the Obolenskys for over 20 years when they arrived in the UK. So he was the link between Gladys's brother Sydney and Princess Maria. Happy to exchange information if it's useful. I'd love any information on Frank from an Obolensky perspective!
Hi, I am Alexandra Ranicar, daughter to Peter Michael Ranicar who died in Nigeria in the early 90's. I've been trying to locate my dad's relatives and seems I am somewhat close now. Please kindly reply. I have his pictures if I can post them here for all to see.
