I remember walking through those gates for the first time in 1957, and ending up meeting a great bunch of lads who are still in touch with each other..to this day. (The Brocket comes to mind)
I also first entered through those gates in september 1957. What a vintage year of school starters!! The most amazing, brilliant, formative years of my life. Come on, lets have a roll call of all other 1957 starters.
Hey Bill,
There is a photo of us all in cross country kit just below that includes a lot of lads that went through those gates in 1957.

Might be mistaken but isn't Bill Sharpe on the Wigan Grammar School 1960s Rugby XV photograph below:
I was in a local leisure club the other day and a geezer overheard me talking about Wigan Grammar. It was in a noisy spar and the guy leaned over and said, "Did you go to Up Holland Grammar?".
I put him straight and then he went into a rant about how disgraceful it was that a great school and building, Wigan Grammar, had been treated. How the building had fallen into the hands of a local baron for a few pieces of silver and then been sold to the NHS for a kings ransom.
My reply was that the last piece of green in Wigan town centre had been disgracefully betrayed by the council in order that a local baron can build a "boys club".
Ironically my own "boys club", Orrell RU Club met its demise whilst in the hands of the self same baron.
Are all those green rugby fields now houses? No more cricket on the Mesnes!
It must be great to be a baron and have the freedom of the town.
Are there any old paintings of the old original Wigan Grammar School?
Alfred Waterhouse designed Wigan
Grammar School which is now The History Museum on Library Street....but this stands on the site of the original school I believe.
Love to see the original building.
Waterhouse did indeed design both the School and the Library - but the Library, opened in 1878, was never the Grammar School, opened 1879.
