Wigan Album

It looks as though this pic. was taken from the top of a railway embankment. Is that Eckersley's Mill & St Joseph's Church in distance? If so, pic may be of Poolstock area

its looking from wigan towards Ince.
the chimney was at the empress mill in anderton street and to the right is St williams church
a little down from the top of the picture on the right hand side you can just about make out the canal and clarington park and part of the Fosters playing field
i would have thought that the area in the forefront is Hardibutts

I lived all my younger years in a house like this on Scholes, 2 up, 2 down as they where called. Hard times with no bathroom, had the tin bath and the outside loo with newspaper squares for the necessities! Thank heavens for the potty under the bed on cold winter nights. The living conditions don't bring back fond memories for me really.

Hi Jean J,My wife says I often wera rose tinted glasses but I can honestly say that growing up in Wigan in the 40's and 50's was a privelege.Everyone was more or less in the same proverbial boat so you didn't realise or notice your circumstances as a child.The parents of that time however were the ones who dealt with the day to day realities whilst we kids just enjoyed the freedom of our giant playground,Wigan.

a Bit of Triangulation from the empress mill and St wiiliams church on an old map makes this photo from St Catherines church? what do others think?

i`ll stick to my original theiry that it is hardibutts in the foreground.
on the basis that st.patricks field is on the upper right of the pic and st williams church is just above it

I think this is a photo taken from one of the flats in Brookhouse. The street in the middle ground is Silver Street and the large gable end just above and to the right would be the Silverwell Hotel. Taken at the start of demolition and re-development in mid 1960s

Deffinitely Silver St in the centre with the gable end of The Silverwell. The line of houses just above centre right was Clarrington Grove with St Pats Kimmick to the right and gehind the sticks is the canal and The Grove Hr. Ince behind that.

The street in the middle of the photo is silver street first street running off it on left is dean street then Afghan street. Down at the bottom of silver street was Darlington street with hardybutts at the top.
