Sorry John this is the only picture that I can find at the moment
The picture was taken in 1967,i worked on this site for 3 years 66/69,it is built on the old goose green graveyard and was built by Rowlinson construction,South Reddish on behalf of Wigan council, the same firm built 4 of the multi storey blocks in scholes in the early seventies.
Would any body know when the old Goose Green grave yard was moved?
tony you right about the chippy but it was "jacks chippy" at the time,,at one time you could get practically any kind of fish to go with your chips,,,,he used to have an extensive list,,,even shark,,believe it or not,,that would be late 60,s early 70,s,,,he sold it to yates,s and moved to poolstock lane,,opposite peters chippy,,,,with regard to moving goose green cemetry,,think it would have been about 1962/3,,it was rumoured the people who actually did the work were paid a "kings ransom"and most of the remains were moved during the night as i recall..
great pic i was at st pauls school when all this was goin on think the gravyard belong to the methodist im sure there was a little chappel there as well believe the masonettes were haunted
yes dianne ,,you right..it was the old methodist and there was indeed a little chapel on the site,,,haunted?? how your mind used to work when you were younger,,,
my dad worked moving the grave yard in 1970 only lasted 2 days said it was really spooky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The graveyard behind the old Methodist church was moved about 1959ish, and they did work during the night, scared us kids to death!!!!!!!!!!! I think St Pauls graveyard was grassed over in the seventies, and the "remains " taken to Gidlow cemetry
my grandma and granddad lillian and tommy fairhurst owned the chippy for over 20yrs before jack he had the green grocers down the road.
We lived at 460 opposite the graveyard when they started to put corrugated iron round it to unearth the graves. I would have been about 11 or 12 at the time so that would have been 1962/3, I remember the smell, if the wind was in the wrong direction, was awful. There was a butchers shop and we used to make jokes about the meat being moved over the road.
