Wonder if The Savoy was there Ron.
Don't think it was. There is no sign on the Gable end.
The toilets were well used during Wigan Fair.
behind the bus station is where Dave Whelan had a shop selling sandwiches, I used to go there in the 60s when I was at the technical college at Parsons Walk.
Thats the bus station exactly as I remember it in 1950/51. The Ormskirk bus pulled in on the opposite side, in front of the Congregational Church. The building next to the church was a cafe (?)& I think thats where I went tap dancing upstairs or maybe it was in the next building, anyone know what the dance school was called ?
The dance school was Mosses run by Tom and Hilda Moss
Thanks to Tony for the info on the dance school. I was into tap dancing, wearing my red tap shoes bought at a shop in the 'little' arcade off Menses(?) St.
This is how I remember it when I were but a lad, working at McAvoys butchers in the owd market 'all, in 1961...Good days.....
Believe my grandfather, Jack Booth from Bottling Wood was a forman builder with Wigan Council at the time, was in charge of building it, he had to draw the plans up himself, no fancy pants in an office on mega money to draw plans then !!!
Half way along that wall was a milk vending machine in the mid sixties, when i was going to Thommy Linacre school. One dinner time me and Dave Abbott had our picture taken by a Wigan Observer snapper and lo and behold they published it the week after.Fame at last, eh me mum were reet proud of that photo. Happy days indeed.
Behind the left hand side was Ormrods building in which Dave Whelan opened his first supermarket in the 60's,I worked there installing the heating and plumbing.
Peter, I remember that milk machine in the 60s, and the chocolate vending machines as well. Used to go visiting my Nan on a Saturday and she would give us 6d when we came away, always got spent in those machines. Remember the Southport bus going from Hope Street opposite the church and chippy, the Southport stop later moved to the top end of the other side near the newsagent kiosk.
