The date was circa 1893. This shop was nos 73-75 Wigan Lane . The Saracen's Head was no 81 Wigan Lane.
The alleyway between Farrington's and no 77 ( Jackson's butchers) led to Rainford Buildings.
Farrington's moved from a smaller shop at 87 Wigan lane situated on the south corner of Coppull Lane. This original shop is illustrated elsewhere in this gallery, as are the shops immediately to the north of Coppull Lane. They include no 89 Crook's grocers and no 95 Robinson's provision dealer.
I never knew my Grandfather - Master Builder who employed his two sons, being:-
John Farrington (my father) and Joseph Farrington his brother, to help build Dawson Avenue, Beech Hill. There seems to have been a fall out and Joseph went to live in Reading, Berks. which funnily enough is very near to where I live now. My father fought in the 2nd world war and was a prisoner of war, fighting the Japanese in Burma.
He didn't see me until I was 5 and was always trying to make something of himself. He did eventually join the Masonic Group, I know he knew one of the Florists in Wigan (Highams) and also Alan Leyland, Solicitor.
I am now aged 83, my mother passed away soon after my father died in 1973. He died at my home, at that time in Sandhurst, when my parents had come to stay for Christmas and to see their grandchildren.
Fred Dove, Editor of the Wigan Observer was my Godfather.
If anyone can throw any light on my Grandfather, who I never met I would me grateful. My father used to take me down to 7 Shared Street to see my Grandmother Farrington but my Grandfather was never there. I think he had left my Grandmother as she suffered from dementia after being knocked down by a car.
I do know that someone was looking for their father on Wigan World and knew it was James Farrington!! I cannot remember the lady's name but did speak to her on the phone. She died a few years ago but until then taught dancing at classes for potential shows.
Any news about the Farrington Family of Ince would be very interesting.
This does all seem to be very curious. There were some Farringtons who became Master Cloggers and had a shop on Wigan Lane.
