Hay Hall welly railway track underneath bridge.
The Plantations at Haigh.
It looks like ‘our man’ is hiding behind the board.
It’s a rather nice scene.
Not the entrance I am too familiar with.
My guess is: it's the bridge over the River Douglas in the Plantations. I would even say that the man and his dog are walking towards the main gates, which are on Wigan Lane. The Yellow Brook and footbridge are not far behind the photographer; possibly, about 50 metres away.
But! It's only my guess. :-)
Ian, I'd say you're right with your deduction of where this is.
The man appears to be in a precarious position with the river below.
Thanks! Cyril. It was quite a steep slope there, which dropped down to flat swampy ground as this area of the River Douglas flooded at times.
Veronica, I would say that he is in a lower position and holding onto one of the branches with his right hand for safety; as he has the pointer in his left hand, he is resting the board against his body.
It has to be the bridge over the Douglas below the Plantation Gates.
I can remember catching the tractor to Haigh Hall that I’m sure was cream with possibly a green stripe on the bodywork.

Well spotted Veronica
