Anyone put a name to this gentleman? On back of photo it just says 'The Village Carrier Upholland'

Alan Millar in one of his books of UpHolland photos identifies him as William Fairclough, Ron.
There was a carter named William Fairclough born circa 1851, living at 29 School Lane UpHolland, on the 1901 census.

What was a Village Carrier, I haven't heard this term before. He looks proud of his job.

Colin - he was a deliveryman, who would have used a horse and cart in those days.
Carriers provided a regular service delivering goods between towns and villages. They would have a regular route, usually using a shop or public house in each place as their collection and delivery point or at least as their contact point.
