Chapel Lane, Wigan

As much as the 1970s picture presents a much better Wigan, I reckon Chapel Lane & Darlington Street would grind to a halt with the volume of traffic if the road system hadn’t been upgraded and those buildings demolished.

Don't know why the JCB is in the road or why the fire brigade are in attendance but it's a cracking picture looking down Darlington Street.
I had forgotten what a fine looking building that was on the corner of Chapel Lane and Darlington Street with it's terracotta exterior, the Derby Arms was on the opposite corner.
In the black and white picture, if you can imagine that fine building demolished to make way for the wider ring road, the building further down (shop below and lighter colour at the top) is in fact that building in the colour picture. There was a cobbled ally as you turned left which took you to the top of Atherton Street, halfway down on the right you could access the little cottages in Gees Court then through an entry onto Harrogate Street were I lived.
These pictures brought back so many memories.
