Such a good dress sense
How things change. My Dad wore overalls to work but on Christmas Day always wore his suit, collar and tie and shirt whilst eating his Christmas dinner. When we’d finished my Dad and uncle took off their jackets, rolled up their sleeves and tackled the dirty dishes.
They looked after their clothes in those days. The clothes would probably have been their Sunday ‘best’ worn on special occasions. Unless they were ‘ posh’ and worked in offices. Probably going through the War made people extra vigilant about looking after them. Coupons were used to buy clothes during the war and a great deal of make do and mend was adhered to. It was instilled in people not to waste anything.
A jolly family photo to treasure if you know the names of the people it’s a good idea to write their names on the back of the photos.
You’re right Veronica. I remember hearing this - Eat it up
Wear it out
Make it do
Or do with out.
We had to be careful with everything.
I can remember being at the table ages after everybody else Ruth. There was a shelf or bar underneath the table and when nobody was looking I transferred bits of food onto it! Awful I know! Sometimes I put bits on my brother’s plate when he wasn’t looking! I bet the mice enjoyed those bits under the table.
Also only remember getting new clothes at Christmas and Easter and Whit Monday in the fifties. Nothing like the throwaway society these days. I also remember ‘hand me downs’ from relatives. We were glad of them!
Is this a relation of micheal kinane and maureen kinane from norley hall (my grand parents)
