Ron, I have the impression that you are looking up King Street, towards the town centre/Wallgate. I am trying to think of what was there or what is partly there. The Turnkey was around that point. If I am right, the white building on the left, half way along, is the old bingo hall - it was slightly set back from some buildings and had about four steps up to the doors.
Hopefully, they aren't going to put up some awful structure which is another eyesore.
Ian i would say the Turnkey was about under were the gable end roof is down some steps the white building used to be the County pictures
Wasn't that where Halliwell's the bottlers was at one time? No idea what is there now.
Cyril, Halliwell's and Lewis's milk bar. There is a picture of both properties under King Street
Ron do you remember if Lewis's was also the Temperance Bar? Was wondering with it being at the side of Halliwell's and maybe trying to tempt folks from the drink. It didn't work though as I'm sure that Halliwell's were still going well into the 1980s.
According to Google Street Map views Einstein's Bierkeller and Kitchen is here now, the front outside of the new building is finished with traditional common bricks, sash windows with stone lintels and with a lower embellished wood façade, so it doesn't look out of place.
