I believe Walking Day in Downall Green was known as "Jelly Sunday",
Must of been early photo this Ron, when I walked on jelly Sunday in 60s Trinity Girls was the Band.
Good photo this Ron, I think everyone loves a brass band.
Ron, This must be a very old photo, I played from 1948 until 1960 & i don,t know any of the men in the photo, i would guess at the 1930s.
When was downall green ever in Wigan?
the boundry was changed around 1976 & the boundry was inbetween simms rd & billinge . all the lids are still audc .
Yes George, it was never in Wigan. It's always been in Ashton in Makerfield. I think the boundary whups has mentioned is the boundary between Ashton Urban District and Billinge, not Wigan.
That half of Ashton is now under St.Helens, but it wasn't back then.
I don't know why it says Wigan on the photo? some folk are daft.
Downall Green has always been a place of confusion. It started off with the cross roads at the top of Spindle Hillock and stretched up Rectory Road with a few side streets off these, Then the council estate was built and people called this Downall Green Estate which came under Ash-in-Mak council but its postal address was NORTH Ashton Wigan. On some area maps it is shown has North Ashton? Now to add more confusion it still has Wigan addresses and phone numbers but comes under St Helens. This is only a part version of DG we will not start with it being called Senely Green.
