DIESEL CLASS 40. D 303 AT NORTH WESTERN STATION

This is a Class 40 diesel locomotive that was built only a few miles away at Vulcan foundry, Newton le Willows about 60 years ago, with 16 wheels and weighs about 130 tons. This is D393, (D326 was the one in the Great Train Robbery of 1963 that came through Wigan). Class 40s vanished in the 1980s and the engine made a whistling noise. But the class 37s that look similar with that big nose are slightly smaller with 12 wheels and about 105 tons, and the engine makes a growling noise. 37's are few and far between these days, but you hear the occasional one menacingly thundering through Wigan, mainly freight trains.
