Reverend David. I have enlarged the inscription on the monument, but it is too blurred for me to read. Is it possible to include what is written?.
Sorry - I thought it was clear enough to be read. Here's the inscription:
This Monument was erected by Public Subscription to the memory of Samuel Short, Engine Winder at St George's Pit, Tyldesley.
Born Dec. 31st 1849. Died Sept. 12th 1902.
On the morning of his decease, when engaged lowering twenty-four workmen into the mine, he was suddenly overcome by a fatal seizure, securing their safety by immediately applying the brake, his dying words were - "Is the steam-brake on - "
Thank you Reverend. His thoughts, even in his last moments on earth, were for his fellow men.
Heroism comes in many forms. RIP
