Went to the upstairs restaurant a few times in the early 1960's . BUSINESS MAN'S LUNCH.3 courses 3/6. We thought we were living the High Life.
I think it was Smith's newsagent and bookshop later on.
Don't remember Baillie's with this more modern frontage, but seem to remember the side window leading to the passageway being arched and set in stone.
I'm sure that in the late 1970s or early 1980s part of the floor in the furniture shop had partly collapsed, and on inspection it was found that a section of sub floor in both there and Baillie's had fallen into an old mine, Smiths later built a new bigger shop on the site.
I thought Brians furniture stores was opposite Wallgate station, did they move?
Kenee - Brians Furniture did move to Wallgate all around 1980.
Ted, I can remember some problem with Smith's bookshop, I seem to recall that the shop was built and they never moved in for ages as some issue arose with the foundations.
Walking past Brians one day in the mid 60s, I saw Michael Miles the then compere of Take your Pick doing the opening ceremony.Tt was said that Brian was was married to a member of female pop group called the Caravelles.
