Richard Atherton ( Dickie ) and partner Jack Cunliffe. Real Life ‘Steptoe and Son’. RICHARD worked for P.M.ROBERTS. D.I.Y in HINDLEY GREEN later in life. Both now sadly gone. I think the horse was called DOBBIN?
Brilliant photo - looks like the late sixties to me - could be wrong. I love these kind of photos.
I used to have a pair of wellies like those! You had to tuck your pants leg in ‘em ‘cos the tops would make a ring round your leg if you didn’t.
Like the kool of the open 'top coat' and the swagger of the turned-over wellies. Dickie looks a capable chap, too, … a bag o' coal no problem for him. And poor old Dobbin … probably saying to himself 'I wish I could have been like Sea Bird ii'.
They look so proud of themselves in their wellies! ;o))
The photo is on here in 2009 by Steve Sargent in item number 235. It was taken in 1968, a great photo from a golden age.
The photo of the rag n bone men was taken on the avenue in Leigh just past Charles Street, it was taken by Dave Montford (a good family friend) just outside his mother's house, I have a copy of it in a catalogue of his work
