A fine set of photographs Bill.
These photos from the 30's always seem to have an air of respectability about them. Very interesting to see the contrast from then and now...
Spot on with your comment Veronica, Respect...that's what's lacking today.
Polished shoes, collar and tie' smart people.
But some did have holes in their socks and tide marks around their neck. Bread and jam for tea.
Each man wearing head dress. That is not much seen
nowadays.
The road sign on the lamp-post amuses me.
"Preston and the North". the North ends in Lancashire and maybe Yorkshire.
Reminds me of a band championed by John Peel - Hatfield and the North !
Well don Billy for these photos. I knew your mum sure she worked at Walmsleys Wigan such a nice lady.Hope I'm not wrong.
The North is in Lancaster, and further North is Carlisle.
Zoonie, you're correct. She had a spell of biking there from Dawson Ave. where we lived. Other times she got a lift with Keith Meadows. I do have photos of me performing in the Walmsley's Christmas concerts produced by Mrs. Sheldon. Not for the fainthearted, me in tights !
Certainly post-1930, when the original stone tablets bearing the names of the 1800 fallen on the Memorial were replaced by cast bronze plaques at a cost of £8 each.
Incidentally, the Memorial was intended to have been placed in the foreground of this shot - in front of the Dog and Partridge and the next door Post Office, but agreement could not be reached between the parties involved to permit the purchase of the site.
