Fourteen Meadows Road is on the right of the photograph. This patch of land will be protected by sheet piles and a concrete coping. Access to this section of the works was difficult so FM road was closed off for some period but allowing residents access.

What was the building on the right used for?
It looks like some kind of dance hall.

Ian, when the works were in progress, it was being used by a motor cart club during the day. I visited the premises one day, to discuss what the contractor was planning when the large crawler crane was arriving on the road outside. Young teenagers were driving carts round a circuit -making more noise than the contractor's plant!!

I used to live on Fourteen Meadows Road until 1971. The building on the right was (the exit from) the canteen of Eckersley's mills, which accommodated hundreds of workers when the mills were working. It was also the venue for concerts & a Christmas pantomime. There are other photos of Eckersley's on Wigan World. I believe it is a listed building, but it's been shamefully neglected for the past 20 years or so.
