The dominant building in the view from the canal between Ince, Whelley and New Springs looking towards Billinge Hill is St Catherine's church. St Patrick's church can also be seen and probably St Matthew's, Highfield. In 1998 when this photograph was taken the gasholders were still there, one of the Scholes blocks of flats, and towards the horizon the former Billinge hospital may also be visible. If you go up the coal slag heap the churches of St Peter, Hindley, St Wilfrid, Standish, and at least two in Atherton and Westhoughton can be seen.
