The Crawford Family Crypt lies underground here.
On the left is the door to the Tower.
June 1995.
Its a fine church DTease. I found that several of my ancestors were christened or married there, even though they lived in Orrell & Pemberton. It was the main church of the Wigan District in those far off days. I must come & visit it one day.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a 3xGreat grandfather James Catterall and an Alce from Yorkshire married at the Parish Church around the early 1800s, James was born at UpHolland and moved to Scholes. I would love to see the actual entry in the Parish records. Too think the Crawford family crypt lies only a few feet underground, there must be some very ancient graves around there.
Veronica sure the church is open Saturday morning's and the public can have look around
Thanks Tom that's worth knowing if I'm in Wigan on a Saturday.
The part of the church between the north door and the tower is the Walmsley Chapel. This was a private chapel for the Walmsley family who were Catholic and lived at Westwood Hall. The chapel seems to have survived the reformation and remained catholic until the mid 20th century, I believe.
