Another one bites the dust.

Remember Chicago rock very well, it was a nice venue in 90s, also worked on the Hub next door (old cinema) that was a massive club but since it's demise the homeless and druggies found their way in and ruined it.

Was that the site where Tescos used to be years ago or was that further down King Street ?

Yes that was Tescos,then Westeads sweet shop,next to that was the Court cinema.

Wasn’t there a church in this vicinity, at one time, or am I mistaken?.

I am puzzled by the caption, D Tease. King Street West is by the side of Wallgate Station.

Albert S. I too think there was a church there some years back and I am pretty certain there was one at the other side of the road, next to the Hippodrome site as well in the early 60's.

Alan H, that caption is the name of this part of the site and not of my making.
It's about two places, King St and King St West.

I am not saying that you are wrong A.W. The only building that I can remember, after the Palace, was the Magistrate’s Clerk’s Office, then a passageway to the Hippodrome pay box, and then The Shakespeare pub. The T.S.B. featured sometime later. I can also remember that the Wigan Borough Fire Service canteen was, at sometime, in this location. I enjoyed many a breakfast, in their canteen, otherwise it was the sandwiches that you had taken with you.

There were two churches in King Street.The Methodist on the Court Cinema side & the Baptist on the County side The minister at the Baptist Church during my boyhood was A Ellis Mood.All the Nonconformist churches used to advertise on the front page of the Observer,so we got to know their names

Donald. I can recollect the church, on the Wallgate side of the Court Cinema. As I remember it, it had steps leading up to the main entrance. Where exactly was the other church situated. Although I was on King Street beat on many an occasion, I just cannot place where the other church was.

Albert.I do not remember exactly.I visited once only .It was very posh compared to St Catharine's.I remember thick blue carpets.Leading Wiganers attended, the Starrs & Eckersleys of the Shirt factory.I see my reference to the minister came out incorrectly.He was Mold not Mood.I have a feeling it was near the Trustee Savings Bank

I think that the Methodist church was on the same site as the Hard Rock Cafe. When I was at the technological college( now the Town Hall) we used the Methodist schoolroom for exams
