Where heroes came to play
Where Billy Boston ran the wing
And Ashton had his day
Here Edwards weaved his magic spells
Offiah left all behind
And heroes came from lands afar
Their glory days to find
I like that DTease, very nice and so true,i spent many years working there at the old central park and met lots of gradley folk from far a field,Fans don't seem to be as Enthusiastic these days the demise of this place certainly had an effect on crowds of today.
A nice, flowing verse DTease. And those concrete slabs had held out well - Most doughty. In fact, I have a stretch of them at upper-belly height down one side of my back garden yet If only I had the same fortitude; I did the back lawn yesterday and the front lawn today - nearly 'kilt' me they did.
When I see pics of this and Tesco, I always think of the families of 'Fans', who had their ashes scattered on the Sacred Ground 'and now it's a store and car park .. You aren't safe anywhere these days.....
The council in the early 1990s appointed a new pest control manager, when invoices came in for work done at Central Park he would then try to bill the leisure department for this work, his excuse - not knowing about Wigan rugby and thinking it was a public park, everyone was dumbfounded at his crass stupidity.
I would walk our dogs along the river path, and close to the end of play (after the announcement about Tesco buying the land) was always amused when some wag would scurry along hanging Tesco carrier bags on the trees and fences along there, wonder if he was a Latics fan? - maybe.
