The girls high school moved to their newly built school on Whitley Crescent in 1965, interestingly the school was then named Woodfield before being re-named again to Mabs Cross in 1972.
When the rugby ground stand at the rear of St Mary's church was demolished and the ground dug over to make way for Tesco, the old graves from an ancient graveyard became exposed and some local children were seen walking around with human skulls, macabre.
You're being disrespectful. It's Mab's Cross now.
You’re not related to Alan by any chance are you jarvo?
Just asking.
This building was formerly Wigan Girl's high school that became Mab's Cross primary school whose first headmaster was Gordon Cooke, a member of St Matthew's church, Highfield.
It was indeed Woodfield Junior after WGHS. Gordon Cooke was the first head, first junior pupils in 1965/6, later became Mab's Cross.
