The tenant when it was sold by auction in 1943 was Mr F Hulbert and he was paying rent of seven pounds sixteen shillings. I imagine that would be annually.
Another lovely stone property to knock down and rebuild for 'Escape to the Country' fans....
What do you think Maureen if Joules and Co saw this lovely stone cottage set in such beautiful surroundings? Is it likely anybody would 'escape' to it?
The late John Dakeyne managing director of the Wigan Observer lived at Glassbrook Cottage for some years.
Thanks DTease.
Today, this property is valued around £409,000.
Colin, I posted a painting of Wigan Pier on here by a Donald Dakeyne. I wonder if your John was a relation?
The tiniest things grate the most. I hate it when they say the rent will be per calender month. No one says per calender month except Estate Agents.
You would think a managing director of the Wigan Observer would have been able to afford to buy the property instead of renting. I don't think stone property was so highly sought after in those days.
Oops I misunderstood who rented the property.
Its been extended now and as a big picture window facing to the west
Colin never said Mr Dakeyene rented it.
Veronica,I doubt very much it would look as beautiful as this by the time they'd finished..when the so called buyers know they're going to be on the programme I bet they tell all their neighbors, then they go to town with their tales of wanting room for ponies, beautiful kitchens, twenty acres of land..I can imagine their neighbors laughing their socks off as they go back to their little abode..they must be the laughing stock of the town.
We're did the name glassbrook cottage originate I had a ancestor died in glassbrooks court schofied lane.
If I was lucky enough to own anything as beautiful as that property I wouldn't alter a thing , only to refresh it when needed as far as decorating. I'm sure it must be of a high standard inside Maureen....it does look well maintained, but I do wonder what it is like now after 20 odd years.
What do you mean Veronica, when you say after 20 years?
I am just wondering if anything has been changed Janette, as Mick says there has been an extension - if it has been done 'sympathetically' well and good. It's about 25 years ago since the photo was taken.
Tom - the name probably originated with the Glassbrook family.
A very old family, they owned a lot of land in South Lancashire.
Glazebury near Culcheth takes its name from them.
THere is also Glassbrook St in Springfield, off Gidlow Lane, behind the Pagefield pub
Thanks Mick can't find any info about the the one in schofied lane he died there in 1870

I just googled the address and saw pics of the inside.. Its a lot of money and needs work, but the views are lovely and a Stone cottage, something I've dreamed of living in, from being a little girl.. If I had the money, I'd take it in a heartbeat..
