This photograph of the Wigan skyline from Scholes was probably taken this century, as the Oak Hotel can be seen, and the glass roof of the Galleries shopping centre. Orchard House maisonette flats were demolished in the 1990s, and not there, but the working men's club where McDonalds is now can be seen.
I must say its not the Scholes of my 'salad days' but I do recognise the Parish Church. I only recall one tree in Scholes and it was in next door's backyard - I thought they were 'posh' because of that blessed tree- - oh and they also had a piano! Daughter played the piano and her Mam sang in a lovely contralto whilst pegging the washing out. There wasn't room for a blade of grass in our yard....then at the other side was Old Mick Doherty playing his fiddle with 'The Wearing o' the Green' ...... Ah sweet memories are made of this!
Apologies for waffling on.... But the musical talent at each side of our house and mi dad's birds twittering and singing their heads off in the shed -it was a riot!
Anyone remember Susan Howarth from Orchard House and what happened to her?
Great picture, I can make out the roof of the Ritz and the new build Co-op Super Store on Crompton Street, now a Bing Hall.
