you can see a modern day map superimposed on an old Ordnace Survey map of this mill and you can slide between the two. It pinpoints exactly where the mill was in relation to the present day roads and buildings.
There was a corn mill in Henry Street, Spring View, in the thirties and forties, and I believe into the fifties.. It was owned by Balls. During the war we would sit on the sandbags, put there to protect their widows. We would have a kids’ concert, and sing all the war time ditties prominent at that time. I was once was taken for a short ride, in Hilton Ball’s car, which was a real treat in those days. Very few had a motor car..
My dad was from Bridge St, born in 1930, I don't recall the street myself. A lot of the area being demolished in the late 60,s and early 70,s. With the map being 1929 i,m sure he would have known it well. Think the Bridge Inn was my Grandads ( Joseph ) local.
Albert, remember Corn Mill in Henry St in 50's, Owd Viewer will also remember it.
This area later became coronation park. I think ashtons farm was at the chapel lane end.[earlier known as bridge hey mill].
You are right Jinksi, I do remember the corn mill, I think it was still there in the 60s.
Jinksky/Owd Viewer. It must have been demolished when all the developmment took place, in Spring View. You two have more knowledge on that,,than me.
Albert didn't you live in Henry St, We lived just round the corner 302 Warrington road, The houses was pulled down early 70s.
Yes Owd Viewer, until 1950.
Albert I was just a baby when you left, born 49, maybe you knew my mothers family Williams thy lived in Walmsley st.
Owd viewer. The only Williams that I knew were the Williams that lived in Ainscow Street.. Mated with Ronnie, and Jimmy. Both have now passed away. May they both rest in peace..
