Thanks for this photo Ron. This was my parish church. I was baptised there, made my first holy communion there and was confirmed there. I was married in the new church. Many happy memories of growing up in a good old fashioned catholic community.
A good picture, I remember this old church well and it being demolished in the mid 1960's.
At the opposite end to the Carnegie Library, two main roads on either side. Is this still the same?. Was Canon Carney the parish priest?.
Albert...The road layout is still the same, Ormskirk Road
going toward Pemberton is still "One Way" from Carnegie Library, past where Graham Fairhurst shop used to be, that
is now Bargain Booze. The other side, Ellesmere Road heading
to Wigan from "Half Way House"hasnt changed much. Ray.
Thank you Ray.
Albert.....yes Cannon Carney was the Parish Priest. I also remember Fr Colbert and Fr o'Donaghue.
The chimneys to the right of the church were on the presbytery and the buildings you can just see through the tree would have been the Junior school. The Infant school was on Ellesmere Road where you can just see a short stretch of fencing.
I can remember starting my school life behind what as I recall was a high 'black' stone wall with a big iron gate in it about 1959. Such a foreboding of doom even at that young age. Shivers......
Was the church where Appleby Court is now?
The road in front of the church is still called Cuthbert St.
Spot on Tommy . Church was on the corner of Ellesmere Road and Cuthbert Street . Junior school was at the other end of Cuthbert Street. Infant schol further down along Ellesmere Road
Thanks for the info Steve.
