The more I look at your photo the stronger my belief becomes: '100 yds.' added to the pavement board, and then the board placed accordingly, would have been even more encouraging - and perhaps cute.
I love café-fish 'n' chips, peas, 1 b&b, and a small cup 'o' tay, but whatever happened to Sifta Sam?
What controversies surround the cuisine of the chippy!
From the notorious practice of 'peas on top' of the fish known as the 'St. Helen's Way' to the barbarity of adding gravy to the proceedings.
I was once accused by a practitioner of the St. Helen's Way of being a namby pamby Wiganner preferring my fish served on a bed of peas accompanied by a drizzle of vinegar.I suppose everything is pretentious to a glassblower.
The only time peas should ever appear on top is over chips in that classic dish once known as a mixture.
Philip, they did have a board at the side of the main road. I think it was the fact that the owners wanted to retire rather than a lack of customers that brought about the end of the Chippy.
you counght beat a wet mixture wiyh scrachings.
Poet: I've lived in St Helens now for Forty four years and still revert to my Wigan slang now and again. A mix or mixture is a split in St Helens, Smacks are called specials, and scratchings are called Scraps. I was in Blackpool as a young lad when I heard the Rab C Nesbit phrase, Hey pal give us a fish supper as he slid down the chippy wall.
Forty four years in St Helens John G? Whatever did you do wrong to deserve such a terrible punishment?
Happy memories.
The terminology of the chippy is not without its perils. Just try asking for a smack in a Liverpool chip shop.
DTease: It's like the Heinz beans question, the answer my friend is blowing in the wind. But no matter where you are, it should always be forward never back.
That's right John G! I remember it now; "A split and a fish, please". But I must admit that, these days, I prefer mine to be compartmentalised as it makes their address much more accessible - Yep, gradely meyt are fish, chips, un peys.
DTease.
I'm sure you'll agree that no customer-respecting shop owner would have left a 'pointer' close to his, or her, shop door during opening hours, and perhaps, also, your agreement that 100 yds inscribed just above the pointer would have been even more encouraging; it would certainly be different.
Currently in Australia visiting family. Son says, 'fancy fish and chips'? Off we toddled only for me to find they served, wait for it, oven chips! Counselling is so expensive here!
Grannieannie, I'm speechless! oven chips? I've nothing against Aussies but good grief! have they no respect for tradition? I thought Sir Les Patterson was a joke but apparently not. I dread to think what they substitute for a Babbies Yed!
Strewth! And I thought the St Helen's way was sacrilege.
Forty four years in St. Helens!! Surely, you must be up for parole soon!
Flippin''ek Grannieannie. Ya' sure ya plane ain't overrun the tarmac and landed in the wild's of NZ. Wouldn't happen in my neck of the woods. I'd be sending a strongly worded letter to that last bastion of cultural prowess Sir Les Patterson if I was you.
