What a tragic sight that is!
very, very sad indeed.
What's the building Behind st George's now nursing home ??
Theresa, none of the buildings in this shot are St. George's which is on the side of the river Douglas opposite what was Central Park. The two buildings are (I think) what was the girls convent and St. John's church.
That's not St Georges. It's St Marys school on the Standishgate side of the ground with the church behind it.
dtease, why would latics fans gloat over it ?? enlighten me.
I can t give a date but the Convent was knocked down well before Central Park was sadly demolished
St Marys church and school on Standishgate. St johns church can just be seen poking out on left of school. Convent was pulled down over 30years before this was taken.
t, there as been a long standing animosity between SOME Latics fans and SOME Wigan Rugby fans.
Some Latics fans were not slow to make their feelings known when Central Park was demolished.
The Cumbrian poet Norman Nicholson was a great admirer of northern grittiness and in particular Wiganners. He wrote:
Blackpool was holidays.
Manchester was the Test.
Barrow for ships, Whitehaven for coal
Millom of course for men
And Wigan for a damned good try.
As I huff and grate and fill my lungs and eye
The once for all starting bell
God grant me guts to die
Giving it Wigan.
Nicholson's phrase Giving it Wigan is well known around Barrow and Millom and is used to describe dogged determination in adversity.
Manchester University's 2014 exhibition of his work was entitled Giving it Wigan.
Let's all Give it Wigan!
I suspect money talks.
Howard P ,I suspect that the money went into the back pocket of a certain gentleman
wish wigan rugby was still playing at central park . instead of the football orientated dw stadium.
blame a certain mr robinson for that.
The last rugby match at Central Park was in September 1999 and by the end of the year it was completely demolished. St Mary's RC church is the dominant building, and the former St Mary's school is next door.
