Past the Carnegie library every school day on my journey to Ormskirk Secondary school. I always thought what an imposing building it was.
If Wigan council had had their way, like many other buildings in Wigan it would not be there now.
St Cuthberts church in the background. Was baptised, made my first holy communion and was confirmed there. It was a "tin tabernacle".
Had a huge schoolboy crush on librarian Susan Wadsworth in mid sixties. Her husband was Melvin (hank) was teacher at Pem boys. She was a lovely woman. I couldn't read fast enough. Hope they are both still ok
Amendment to post above. Should have been Sheila Wadsworth. Sorry Sheila. I'm unsure again now. Old age eh???
So true Bewley, thankfully the construction company bought it, lets hope someone buys and restores Hindley library.
We would stand on Ellesmere Road to watch Pemberton Carnival, and later liked to watch Wigan Carnival - wonder why they stopped doing these as I know they were popular.
Iused to spend hours in that library as a child in the early 60s and Hank was my form teacher at pem boys but I never knew that there was a connection.
i was born 200yds away and played on the steps as a kid from 1952 onwards then lived at 2 Ellesmere Rd. for some years opposite the library not knowing my grandfarther was at the cermony and was a friend of lord Balcarres. my gr gr gr granddad is the man with the white beard at the opening in the photo I have a family photo of him after the opening on my wall
