The photo is of the canal basin in Preston, on the Lancaster Canal. WC&ICo had several iron boats based on the canal, which was only connected to the L&LC by the tramway between Walton Summit and Preston. Coal could be delivered to the canal at Preston by rail, and transhipped into boats for onward delivery.
The registration plate for Preston is visible in the centre of the transome.
The location is Kendal basin, the northernmost reach of the Lancaster Canal.
My Grandfather Richard Fazackerley, worked a Wigan coal & iron boat before WW1 carrying coal from Preston to Kendal power station. I think his boat was called EXPRESS. He was one of 11 sons I think most of his brothers worked on the canal, I believe 4 generations of my family worked on the Lancaster canal.
