I am sure that the rope for winding the cages was a flat one and as one cage went down one shaft the other came up. On the pic you can see the 2 headgears

JB;This looks like john pit the drift mine was Standish hall;I think the house in the photo is still there

The two shafts are still there, though obviously capped and fenced off.

John Pit was linked to Standish Hall drift in 1953. When John Pit closed in April 1954 the reserves were worked from Standish Hall drift.

Yes Fred , John pit had flat winding ropes. I worked there ( with little Sid) when the tunnel from the John pit workings to Standish hall drift was developed to eliminate the winding of the coal .
