Shepherds Arms
Yes the Shepherds Arms shut. Is Britannia Bridge the canal road bridge or is it the area, ie the School now closed?
My Grsndad and his mates were in the Shep Vault every afternoon watching no Germans tried to come over Britannia Bridge trying to invade Lower Ince and Spring View ? Well that's whot he told my Grandma.
A big contrast between the old pub, and the well kept house, next door. Are those terraced houses still standing?.
Britannia Bridge was built in 1816 over the canal and along with the nearby locks is a listed building. Over time its name extended to the surrounding area along with the school.
Although the bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is named Britannia Bridge, it is probably not THE Britannia Bridge. The boundary between Ince-in-Makerfield and Wigan is to the north of the bridge - the only sign of it now being Boundary Street to the East of where Warrington Road, Ince, meets Warrington Lane, Wigan. The original boundary, however, followed the line of the Clarington Brook - and it is probable that the bridge which carried the road over the brook was called Britannia Bridge.
Jinski. Your granddad was in the same league as Rob Wilton. He told his wife how he, Jimmy Bottomly, Tommy Henshaw, and Cliff Baxter, his A.R.P. mates, would put paid to Hitler, should he show his face.
