This is when health, and safety wasn't a consideration, I wouldn't have thought that food poisoning would have been any great issue. All you had in the house was a meat safe, a wooden cabinet, with a door frame that had a mesh centre, just to allow ventilation, and keep the flies out. In my estimation, nowadays everything is too clean, and sterile.
