Hargreaves general store, owned by James Hargreaves after he retired as police inspector from Wigan Borough. Car possibly a Morris Oxford?

Comment by: DerekB on 1st February 2018 at 14:16

Dave, think the car is a Morris Minor. The date is probably pre 1960 as the street is still cobbled.

Awww, the Morris Minor.my very first car, what I'd give to have it now.

There is a Morris Minor near us in Abram and the gentleman who drives it wears a trilby hat, and it just looks "right"!

Takes me back to 1966 that car - a slate blue colour - I can see it in my minds eye at the end of John Street

It's a Morris Oxford Series 1- much bigger than the Morris Minor

Mine was Mark 1..split windscreen.

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 1st February 2018 at 20:19

The is indeed a Morris Minor on or before 1960.
This model has the Semaphore-style trafficator, after 1961, they were replaced by flashing indicators seen on cars today. The very early Morris Minor had a split windscreen and smaller rear view window. The first Morris Minor came off the production line in 1948 and ended in 1972.

I passed my test in 1975..and I got mine from the lovely Mrs Turner in Seven Stars..the steering on it was very positive..I then got a Morris Marina which I hated then a great Ford Cortina Estate which I loved, but oh I could.
never forget that little Morris Minor.

This is not a Morris Minor - it is Morris Oxford, a bigger car altogether.

Maureen, My first car was a 1955 Morris Minor with split screen, (see album assorted old cars) I believe you can now buy a rebuilt completely modernised one for about £20,000. H.

Harry..Oh to have a spare £20,000 eh!.

Yes the Morris Oxford was a bigger and has a slightly longer wheelbase than the Morris Minor, that's why clearly this is a Morris Minor. The Minor has the engine bonnet handle badge emblem with the letter "M" in a red background. "You can see the chrome handle on top of the bonnet". If you look at the front wing next to the headlight, the Minor has more panel curves then the Oxford.

I suspect Austin!

Comment by: Garry on 2nd February 2018 at 09:59

Without shadow of doubt Morris Oxford 1000.
Never a Minor.

Comment by: irene roberts on 2nd February 2018 at 12:49

My hubby says Morris Minor as the 1959 Oxford had a wing-shaped chrome moulding at the rear-door area.

Comment by: Maureen on 2nd February 2018 at 13:42

I wish Mr Hargreaves was here to put us all right.ha ha.

Comment by: Alan on 2nd February 2018 at 13:43

Comment by: Harry C. on 3rd February 2018 at 08:05

Irene the 1959 Morris Oxford was the more modern square shape.

Comment by: Ray on 3rd February 2018 at 10:01

Harry C, Your comments refer to the Morris Oxford designed by Farina, Some of the above remarks about Morris Oxfords are the earlier model by Issigonis, who designed the Morris
Minor on this page. Ray.

Comment by: Harry C. on 3rd February 2018 at 11:22

Point taken Ray, there was also a Morris Isis in the 1950's Stan the butcher in Greenough Street had the shooting brake model, I remember the gear lever and hand brake were on the right hand side of the drivers seat, it also had a front bench seat to fit three passengers.

Comment by: Keith Beckett on 3rd February 2018 at 19:52

There were detail differences between the two models.
This photo of an Oxford confirms the car shown in the Barnsley Street photo is a Minor.
