This young lady died young leaving 5 children I believe and apparently there are 2 still surviving - I do hope they get to see this image of their mother as a schoolgirl. Perhaps it's Whit Monday after the walks - I know she attended St Patricks- perhaps she went to the Convent as well. Her hat reminds of the convent girl's hats.
Lovely young girl Veronica, all dressed up, look at those silk gloves & patent shoes. The dress made to last with a big hem, very endearing. Thanks for sharing.
I have many pictures of my Grandma, some of her working on the Pit Brow but mostly they are more formal pictures like this one where she is dressed in her Sunday Best. Looking at these you would never imagine her picking dirt from coal on the Pit Brow.
Equally, my Grandad who also worked in the pit would never consider going to Town unless he was wearing his best suit, collar and tie and highly polished shoes. He also had a bowler hat but I don't know why because no one could ever persuade him to wear it outside his own front door.
Nowadays dress is more informal but I still think it's good for the soul to "Gild the Lily" once in a while.
