Quelle Surprise ! The Council bought it for renovations and then demolished it.
Very interesting Ron. I am trying to think where Bishopgate is.
What building is the pointed dome to the left of the photo attached to?
This building was on the corner of Bishopgate and Dorning Street/Hallgate, the telephone exchange is now on the site, there is a plaque on the wall of the exchan ge commemorating the old building.
Bishopgate is a continuation Crawford st.running up to the parish church from king st.west
Ian, the domed building to the left is the entrance to the upper floors of Gerrard Winstanley House which is on Crawford St. opposite the Parish Church gardens.
Ian, it's the rotunda of the gate keepers lodge on the former Wigan Magistrates and County Police Courts building.
This is from Stuff - On This Day In History:
ON THIS DAY, 10th December 1745
Bonnie Prince Charlie lodged at Walmesley House on his retreat back to Scotland.
The Duke of Cumberland who was pursuing Charles also lodged here the following night, did they change the bed linen I wonder.
Many thanks Cyril and Derek.
I've got my bearings now!
Thank you to you both.
