From the website of the Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club (llsc.org.uk). Taken about 1958 by naturalist and ornithologist Tom Edmondson when he lived at Leigh. A hide at the flash is named after him, for his pioneering work in promoting interest in the area's wildlife. He died in February 2016, aged 93.
This view was taken from the tip seen in the first shot, towards Leigh. It appears to be of an empty coal train on its way to Bickershaw Colliery, which would have been behind the photographer. Very little now exists of the embankment the train is running on, which must have been made up as the land subsided.

This is a great shot. For me it's reminiscent of the Union Pacific track across the Great Salt Lake near Promontory in Utah.

I remember this view and the trains, the water closest was Ramsdale flash,in 1950 Pennington flash was much bigger than now,it reached St.Helen's Rd.then it became the local rubbish tip for years, and polluted the water, later Ramsdale was joined onto Pennington.
