The home of Wigan Rugby League Club for 97 years was to make way for a Tesco supermarket.
On the 6th of September 1902 Wigan played at Central Park for the first time in the opening match of the newly formed first division.
An estimated crowd of 9,000 spectators saw Wigan beat Batley 14-8.
Tesco don't Muck about do they . Looks like they're assembling the ladies underwear section right away.
No, I think that's the bakery Poet, the ladies underwear section is upstairs......apparently......,at least that's what people tell me, as I have little experience of such matters myself. It's just adjacent to the socks and tee shirt section evidently, although I wouldn't know personally, never having been in the place. I shop at M&S these days you see. Did I mention my AGA by the way?. I could have made good use of some of those roofing sheets an' all. Too blimmin' late now though. 20 years too late in fact. Bugger!
Sorry Oz , but those blokes on the crane are very eager to put the sign up.
I wish I'd never clicked to see this image.Tragic. My old Dad who had been going to CP since the 1920's never went to another match again. He also disagreed with the all seater stadia - everytime anything happens, they all stand up !
The real end of the world
Interesting photo Frank. Cue the brass band music Abide With Me and memories of happier times for those who placed their relatives ashes around the hallowed turf of CP. RIP.
