Cannot remember the clock in the 50's. Melias was around the corner facing the church

Apart from tram lines and gantry, nowt much has changed in over a hundred years.

Is the Bird ith Hand pub still on the corner of the row, top right hand side?.

I think this is looking up market street with Ladies lane on the left.

Albert,This is the top of Market st.with St Johns church.The Bird is at the bottom end opposite St Peters church.More or less in the centre of the photo just further up from the church was a pub called The Black Horse

Sorry Albert, yes the Bird is still open.

The pub round the right hand corner of the pic is the Lord Nelson. The Bird I'th Hand is at the crossroads at the bottom of Market Street.

Sorry folks. I thought that the church shown, was St Peter's.

The shop on the right where all the people are congregated is now owned and run by Mrs. Pye, I suspect.

Unless I'm mistaken even the shop fronts are still the same in many cases.
Actually if they could be restored they look better than any modern ones.

Doesn't the street look better without all the litter, signs and other rubbish that clutter up our streets these days?

D.tease it does look clean and tidy,remember going to a cycle shop at the top of market st think it was called Tom Hughes,not many shop steps mopped and donkey stoned these days .

I remember Bill Hursts bike shop in the middle of Market St and a toy shop at the very bottom of Ladies Lane called Scotts? that sold a few bikes.

Pw .your right it was bill hurst halfway up market st on the right .

Bill Hursts, I remember buying thick elastic band from there, think it was about ¼" thick, used it for catapults (are they called slingshots these days?)

I don't remember the clock,but like other towns before the supermarkets,the street was full of shops,there was even a bakery,Wilcocks at the bottom.

Bought my laccy for my catty from Scotts.Before that used to use old inner tubes.We would go out and cut a good two leg from a tree or use a couple of dolly pegs(useless)

I remember Bill Hursts cycle shop , he was always a grumpy old fella but it smelled wonderful of new bike tyres when you went in and the bell went ding. I once asked if I could look at the bikes and he ushered me back out on to the pavement growling `you can look through the window` . I went across the road to Winstanleys and bought one there instead.
