Thanks for the photo Keith. Obviously whilst living in Spring Street and walked into town, down Darlington Street, I must have seen this hundreds of times, but I cant remember it?

This Retort house was built around 1948 to replace a much smaller in area and very much lower Retort that was located between this house and the main line ( to the left of the house )
I got some very grainy shots of the construction taking place from the History shop a few years ago. This is a far better quality shot

My nan used to live on Warrington lane, and we used to walk down past the Gas works 2 -3 times a week. All the fire and the smoke used to be so frightening to a 5 year old.
