I suspect you're a Professional Photographer Frank, looking at these great images. They also make a big change from these boring HGV that are flooding Wigan World album.
This is what this sites all about, people and places, not dirty smelly trucks and trailers.I'm sure many will agree.
Great photo, and an illustration of how the world has changed even in the last 30 years. Where would those young lads be now if they were youngsters today? Most likely sat in front of a screen. Sad.
I just love these old photos of Wigan..they have an atmosphere of their very own...thank you Frank,I hope there's more.
It's great to see once again how children showed no miff when allowing others very much younger, into their games - Can I have a kick, mister? I've a sneaky suspicion that the youngster is a left-footer.
I agree they would be all sat in front a screen (a computer screen more likely) having their brains turned into mush by the latest Assassins Creed or Call of Duty violent video game, or being on facebook or twiiter all day posting about every detail of their day. Even if they got out there would be nowhere for them to go; a street like that now would be littered with cars parked bumper to bumper. It's OK saying they could go to an indoor centre, but money always comes into it. I've noticed a lot of so-called public playing fields now being completely fenced off and turned into sportsfields for football clubs, which is stopping youths and dog walkers from accessing it and doing what's normal.
Thanks to everybody for the comments. These pictures and 460 others are in my latest book "Just One More" Volume 2. I am a retired press photographer having worked for the Wigan papers for over 40 years and, besides the books that I have out at the moment, I will be producing 5 more books with plenty of photographs covering all aspects of Wigan life from the years that I worked. The books are on sale at Rydings news stall in Wigan market hall, the Museum of Wigan Life in Library Street, Pemberton Flowers in Ormskirk Road, Pemberton, Physio and Foot Surgery in Broad O'th Lane, Shevington and from my website-Frank Orrell Photography. I will post some more pictures in the near future and hope that all this doesn't appear too much like an advertising ploy.
Sorry that should have said facebook page. I don't have a website.
Frank advertising is the only way you will sell them, I will be popping into the Shevy foot place for mine.
Wonderful pictures and as they are professional an added bonus! It's not just people and places either on Wigan World!
We are asked to "upload old photos"!
"It's easy"!
In other words take the rough with the smooth Howard!
Frank, I look forward very much to seeing more of your photos. I remember you very well. When in the police at Pemberton/Wigan,70's/90's, you were there at most incidents with your camera. Hope you can give us some with our old colleagues on, at Lattics/Wigan Rugby.
I have searched for 1 in particular, which I am told was over the Lattics social club bar, I and other officers, (Sgt and about 5 P.C's) are holding back the crowd at a celebration on the pitch, where the management were celebrating some kind of achievement. C.1980.
Hello Dave, Sorry that it took a while to get back to you but I can't find the particular photo that you refer to. There is a picture in my Wigan Athletic book from the match against Leeds in the FA Cup in 1987 showing the police prescence behind the Leeds fans. In my Wigan Rugby League book there are police photos at the three homecomings in 1988, 1992 and 1994.
Blimey, I was 90% convinced that was me on the ball, as I used to play there after school, would've been a couple of years earlier though, 83/84, looks like me though.
