The building has changed in 55 years and is the bend still as dangerous?
I suspect this is a recent photo.
Howard, I suspect your suspicions are correct. The clue is in the sub-heading where Barrie mentions he took the photo a month ago. but I suppose recent is all relative really.
It all depends who is behind the wheel, Phil. You drive to the road conditions ie slow down on bends.
Sorry Garry I'm not sure what you are responding to there. I made no reference to speed or driving in my comment.
Is it me or have I landed on a different planet?
Yeah, planet Tinytodger DTease, where intelligent life is rumoured to exist, but as yet hasn't actually been discovered.
Garry's comment is in reply to Barrie, who asks if the bend is still dangerous.
Okay, now that we have sorted out the curves and speeds, back to the original question. What was the pub and smithy in 1962 ???
Loz, if Garry is responding to Barrie why did he refer to me in his comment?
Thanks for that Loz, for a minute there I thought I was going to need the electric shock treatment again. Frightening!
Loz spot on!
I suspect Garry meant Barrie and not Phil. It's an easy one to work out.
Would I be correct in thinking that the word ' suspect ' would be your chosen word of the month Howard? It's just that you appear to be using the word quite frequently of late. There are other words in the dictionary you know that convey the same meaning......but I'm forgetting, you don't actually possess a dictionary do you?...as is evident from your previous posts. Still, all the best my friend. Love and kisses.
Regards. Ozy.
I am also suspecting Ozy you are adopting the position of Sherlock Holmes of the dictionary AND how it should or should not be expressed. Confidence is good, education is better, arrogance is worse , courtesy is respect . We all have our own, think about it!
Garry meant Barrie. Barrie agrees with Phil. Howard P is a suspect. Julie is taking the position of Sherlock Holmes and Ozy is having trouble with his todger.
Being sober doesn't agree with me. I'm much happier in my own world of boozy befuddlement. Maybe all this would make sense there.
Please carry on it's the best laugh I've had in ages even if it's bewildering!
I 'suspect' Garry has been at the sherry again!
Ah' It's April fools day. Now this all makes sense.
Thanks guys for the best laugh I have had for a few days. I never thought that my question would raise such a debate.!!!! Growing up in Standish in the 1950's early '60's trying to get out of Moss Grove in a vehicle or crossing the road to Tom Robinson's or Annie Park's shop was at times a nightmare.
Father had a problem getting the car into or out of the garage at times due to traffic not slowing for the bend.
Up until 1954/55, Almonds employed a blacksmith to shoe the horses they had and to provide a service as a general blacksmith-as a kid it was fun standing in front of the smithy doors watching him work with the old furnace glowing red hot and the bellows to the side of it. I believed he retired in 1955 and the smithy became redundant, hence Father rented that part of the Horseshoe Inn (separate from the pub) as a garage until that September day in 1962. There is a photograph in "Wigan Streets" under Standish showing the Pub in 2003. When did it close?
Is this OZY world or are we free to express our own comments. I suspect the later.
Veronica, your right ha ha ha. I got the name wrong, but it's no big deal.
GW it's April fool today not yesterday.
No D Tease your not on a different planet, I suspect it is you.lol
I think knowing Tom Robinson he would have laughed at the fact his shop became a funeral parlour. He used to like going across to the Horseshoe for a little tot late on. Used to go to Annie Parks, now also a funeral parlour, for our sherbert lemons.
Good grief Alan! Don't you start suspecting as well. I'm having enough trouble with Howard P without you joining in!
My head's hurting now.
I suspect everyone has 'gone round the bend' on this one Barry - thanks for the photo and the laughter... And those with the sense of humour!
Ozy or is it Eddie, why be so ignorant to people towards their comments. Looking back at some of your comments, SUSPECT is word a well used by you.
Well said Julie, I suspect your right.
The Horeshoe closed in January 2013
Thank you Cindy, an answer at last. I am surprised that it was only 4 years ago. Didn't really noticed in 2012 when we visited the old house in Moss Grove to look around. Weather was lousy that day.
I suspect it's Sherry time, cheers.
Have one for me Garry.
Congrats, Garry. That last comment may well be the sanest of the debate on this contribution!.....at least in my humble opinion!
Just a little humour Ellen, to lighten the weary load.
What about my sherbert lemons :)
Free sherbet lemons with every prepaid funeral - compliments of Annie Parks! Does that round things up Standisher?
Might be cheeky and ask for bon bons :)
D Tease,I agree whole heartedly, and have really enjoyed these recent series of comment in Album, and have sounded like a mad fool with my loud chuckles! My daughter actually thought I had succumbed to senility one day!!
